It’s that time of year!!! Awards season is fast approaching and I’m thrilled to follow the action and drama. The Golden Globes took place this past week and the results were interesting. I sat on the couch with a few of my favorite snacks (champagne and potato chips a’la Seven Year Itch, and popcorn sprayed with truffle oil). As I watched, I was pleased by some of the nominations and wins, but I was also struck by just how narrow the selection of nominations felt to me. It feels like all of the nominated movies just came out over the holidays. Granted – I don’t remember many movies from the summer or fall, other than District 9 and UP, but still….here are my thoughts…
I was rooting for Nine simply because I like movie-musicals and I think success of one encourages creation of more….what can I say, I like to support my genre. Nine was nominated for 5 awards and won NOTHING....insert groan here, I just don’t want to talk about it anymore. I was very glad to see that Glee (I love you Matthew Morrison!) won Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical and Grey Gardens won Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television with the perpetually lovely Drew Barrymore winning Best Performance By An Actress in the same category. Grey Gardens was just here in Houston at Stages Repertory Theatre a few months ago and it was stellar. I’m always happy to see a great bit of theatre enjoy success in other mediums.
If I could re-write the results, I would have awarded Hugh Laurie from House with the award for Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series Or Drama. He’s a genius and so are the writers of that show, in my humble opinion. Here’s a little known fact- Hugh Laurie was the president of Footlights, a famed undergraduate comedy review group at Cambridge University and Emma Thompson was the Vice President! And did you also know that Drew Barrymore’s family are also the inspiration of a Broadway and West End play called The Royal Family? I’m stating the obvious when I say the world of stage and screen actors is very interconnected.
It seems to me that TV, movies, and theatre can all share inspiration and talent. When awards season rolls around, I’m not just thinking about who will win, or deserves to win, I’m also wondering which of these actors might take a stage roll next!
What did you think about the Golden Globes? What was the highlight of the show for you? Was your favorite show or actor passed over for an award you think they deserved? Let’s talk about it!!
P.S. – I haven’t seen Everybody's Fine so I don’t know if Paul McCartney’s song was any good, but I’d put money on it being great because I love everything he does!
See you under the stars!
