Re: South Pacific talkback

I saw the show Tuesday & really loved it. The performers were great, but the most incredible part to me was that huge orchestra. Those musicians were amazing, & I loved hearing the strings...the harp and those wonderful violins & cellos. The flutes & the horns were wonderful too. They made that familar music sound so fresh & new. Thanks TUTS for another great show!

Re: South Pacific talkback

ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE. I was fully engaged from start to finish. Nellie's voice was simply stunning! As for Emile's lovely baritone, I found myself falling in love with him by the end of the show! My favorite song is "Bali Ha'i" with "Happy Talk" a close second. The orchestra made it all sound so rich and fantastic. I encourage anyone who enjoys musical theatre to go and see this show. Truly amazing! Bravo!

Re: South Pacific talkback

This was, quite simply, theatrical perfection. I was privileged to see this production on Broadway shortly after it won the Tony. It was the highlight of a trip that included several high-caliber shows. This production was, on many levels, even better than Lincoln Center's original production.

I am very proud to have this level of quality in my hometown. Please keep up the great work TUTS.

Re: South Pacific talkback

I loved the show and music, but saw no need for the nudity which seems to amuse so many people.

Re: South Pacific talkback

Fantastic production, top quality. "There is nothing like a dame" was the highlight for me! Good fun. A magic moment occurred early in the show after Emil's first rendition of "some enchanted evening" when the audience, including me, burst into applause.

Re: South Pacific talkback

It was seamless---from the sets to the songs to the story---I have seen South Pacific several times---grew up on South Pacific the movie and sang their songs on several occassions---But this is the absolute best ever----Why do you have to leave------

the talent was top notch and the entire production was amazing. we have been season tickets holders for several years and thought this was one of the best ever. Nellie and Emilie were sooo fantastic. Billis was terrific. Music perfect! Thank you.

Absolutely loved it!! Every song is a classic! The cast was fantastic!! Every single one brings something unique to the stage. Broadway quality all the way!!!
(More than made up for the awful Miss Saigon we walked out on.)

Re: South Pacific talkback

Great show! But, as usual, unless you are sitting in the first 10 rows or so,
and not in seats near the side, you can not see faces. Also, sound level is too low;
theatre is way too big! Next time, save your money (unless you can get seats
closer than row G and towards center). Go to London instead. Or maybe,
the smaller venues in Houston.

Re: South Pacific talkback

I have seen many productions of South Pacific and I consider this to be the best! The show was fresh and charming and still hammered home its point. I disagree with James Bergen. We sat in row P, 103-104 and had fabulous seats, could hear and see well. I've attended so many shows at the Hobby Center and really love it!

Re: South Pacific talkback

We drove down from Dallas last weekend to attend the Saturday matinee with friends. It was undoubtedly one of the best performances we have seen in a long time.

Re: South Pacific talkback

I'm usually pretty good with my words, but I can't express how I felt about this show. I feel like I was let in on a secret, allowed to see three hours of magic, and transported to a different time and place. I'm an avid theatre fan, and after this show was over, I felt like I felt the first time I heard an orchestra, the first time I heard a chorus, the first time I felt that swell of emotion from a story. Oh, gosh, I just loved it so much! THANK YOU, TUTS, for bringing this masterpiece to us. Please bring South Pacific back soon.

Re: South Pacific talkback

Bravo!!!! Perfection is the only word to describe this wonderful performance. The vocalists were A+, the scenery fantastic. Everything about this performance made for a delightful evening.
Thank you for a beautiful South Pacific.

We have been season tickets holders for 10+ years. This is absolutely the best show we have seen. By the way, Sound of Music was top-notch also.

You have done a wonderful job this season. Thank you !!!!

Re: South Pacific talkback

Nellie was perfect, spot on....absolutely endearing and believable. Bloody Mary, Joe, Emile, Luther....really really fine performance....I was transported...Thank you!!!! (P.S. I do love London theater with the smaller venues, but this is TX, TX is BIG...and the performance was still wonderful, different, but wonderful still

Re: South Pacific talkback

I loved every minute of the show and I have seen South Pacific several times, but this was an amazing production. The only problem is that after the show (and I'm writing this 4 days afterward) all the songs keep going through my head and "I can't wash that song right out of my hair"! Everything about the performance was delightful and wonderful. Like some others, I prefer the small theater venues of New York and London, but I'm so glad we have TUTS and a great production like South Pacific.

Re: South Pacific talkback

This production was the best one of the year at TUTS!! We even attended 2 shows on Broadway in the fall and South Pacific rocked! Delightful!

Re: South Pacific talkback

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. However, since the show, I've started uncontrollably breaking into song phrase "Some enchanted evening...you may see a stranger” at the most inappropriate times and places. My wife finds it to be quite annoying.

Re: South Pacific talkback

My family and I were uncomfortable with the sex-charged version of South Pacific presented by TUTS on 3/16/10. We have seen and enjoyed this classic several times in film and on stage and do not recall these presentations to be so graphic in their focus of the sex urge. While we realize that a large part of this play is about sexual desires, we feel the current presentation has cheapened and made this classic smutty. I could not recommend it to others because of the message it sends that cheapens women and sexual desires. I also plan to ask more questions about future TUTS presentations before buying a ticket.

While the director may feel this "updating" is necessary for modern audiences, this is belied by the fact that G rated movies are as a whole much more successful financially than more explicitly sexual movies. It seems movie makers prefer to make R rated movies even though they are not as financially successful as G rated. It is probably harder to make a good G movie (or play) than one with highly emotional sex and violence scenes.

I accept that you, the director and anyone else who funds such presentations have the freedom in this country to choose how to structure such presentations within in the law. I expect you also accept the fact that I have the freedom to choose whether to patronize them.

I hope in the future that TUTS will fully disclose the nature of its presentations to the public.

Otherwise, we enjoyed the music and the presentation.

Re: South Pacific talkback

i would point out here that the MOST successful movie of all time, the current AVATAR, is rated PG-13 and not G.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/

In fact, the trend toward 3-D as an option, and the recent raising of 3-D/Imax tickets, may reflect the influence of this film upon the profitability as well as the content of future "all platform" movies, which are aimed at both children and adults.

Furthermore, here is the list of the top ten most successful films of all time, according to Wikipedia:

1 Avatar 20th Century Fox $2,740,408,000 2009
[# 1]
2 Titanic Paramount Pictures $1,843,201,268 1997
[# 2]
3 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King New Line Cinema $1,119,110,941 2003
[# 3]
4 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Walt Disney Pictures $1,066,179,725 2006
[# 4]
5 The Dark Knight Warner Bros. $1,001,921,825 2008
[# 5]
6 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Warner Bros. $974,733,550 2001
[# 6]
7 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Walt Disney Pictures $960,996,492 2007
[# 7]
8 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Warner Bros. $938,212,738 2007
[# 8]
9 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Warner Bros. $933,959,197 2009
[# 9]
10 The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers New Line Cinema $925,282,504 2002
[# 10]

AND while i have not researched each film above's ratings, i would bet that fewer than half are actually rated G. And certainly conservative audiences, both literary and cinematic, have found the content of some HARRY POTTER stories less than "wholesome."

While everyone's opinion of what is acceptable in a live performance is their own and valid in that way, using an argument that a G rating is actually more profitable does not help support anyone's own personal point of view. Asking more questions and doing your own research is paramount, as opinions are so subjective. Perhaps you have a trusted friend who shares your perspective on what is acceptable and what is too explicit; if their subscription falls before yours in each show's run, they can look at the performance first and let you know if they fear your family's take will find it lacking in taste. In that way, you'd have time to exchange your tickets and let others who enjoy a more diverse or sophisticated portrayal use your wonderful subscribed seats. You may be more comfortable trusting a peer's word on what they see live than that of a staff member at TUTS you may question over the phone, as you may realize that since some TUTS shows are tours, some staff members may have not seen the staging prior to its arrival in Houston.
