Bringing the stars within reach.
At TUTS, we take that whole “all the world’s a stage” adage pretty literally. That’s why we team up with schools, hospitals and other civic organizations to bring the magic of musical theatre beyond our curtain and into the community. From wonder-filled performances to one-on-one workshops, our mission is to engage audiences of all abilities with accessible, inclusive musical theatre education.
From our first show under the stars in Hermann Park, TUTS has remained passionate about bringing musical theatre to the community. In 1972, as TUTS expanded its volunteer workforce and planned its first performances at the Music Hall, troupe members also began performing small touring shows for hospitals, retirement homes, correctional institutions and civic organizations. For audiences who couldn’t make it to the theatre, TUTS would bring the theatre to them. This community enrichment grew naturally to include education, and TUTS’ Classes in the Community program now offers a spectrum of creative coursework, tours and training throughout the Houston metropolitan area.
Participants delve into lyrics and lighting, set building and STEM training, where educators are taught to incorporate the arts into other areas of study, like math or science. Our programs impact over 68,000 individuals annually, and include collaborations in theatre arts training with organizations like the YMCA of Greater Houston, Texas Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
