INTRODUCTION
A LETTER FROM RANDY and The River continued to provide a unique artistic learning experience for our students. A number of students from both schools were cast in our mainstage productions, as well as in Seussical. We’re just beginning to see the real impact of our schools, and I know we’ll continue to grow and build upon our successes as both programs move into the next 50 years. The investment we’re making in these two programs is a vitally important part of the mission of TUTS. We are also just beginning a partnership with the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts for the 2019/2020 academic year, where TUTS Teaching Artists will collaborate with the HSPVA Theatre Department to engage students in a musical theatre curriculum developed specifically for this partnership. Theatre Under The Stars, Houston’s home for musical theatre, continued to evolve and build upon our legacy during the 2018/2019 season. Our 50th Anniversary was a seminal moment for the organization, where we self-produced every single show, celebrated our rich history with numerous events, and created a launchpad for the organization as we enter the next 50 years. We ended the season on an all time high artistically, and received great reviews for all six productions, showcasing a level of artistry that can only be experienced at TUTS. We were nominated in five categories for the 2019 Houston Press Theatre Awards, and we won for Best Musical (Ragtime), Best Choreographer (Oklahoma!), Best Director for a Musical (Ragtime), and BEST OVERALL SEASON! We also saw our Spotlight Series really take off during the season — it’s a wonderful way to introduce your friends and family to the magic of TUTS. Our “meet and greet” sessions held at the beginning of each show’s rehearsals bring together entire casts and creative teams, along with TUTS staff and Board members. If you haven’t attended these programs yet, please add them to your calendar for the upcoming season. On the community engagement front, we definitely moved into a new realm with our first Public Works Houston production, Seussical, at Miller Outdoor Theatre during July. We had more than 100 people involved in the show from a variety of community partners, as well as Broadway performers and our own students. The enormous impact of this program will continue to inspire us all as we work with our community partners during the upcoming season. This event is in many ways the fulfillment of Frank Young’s vision of a show for all of Houston, demonstrating what’s possible when we all work together; and I think it’s a fitting celebration of his legacy. In addition, our educational programs at the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre
The Tommy Tune Awards was more exciting than ever, with a larger group of 51 schools from the Houston area included. For those who haven’t attended this event, you don’t know what you’re missing. The energy in the theatre is unbelievable, and the exuberance of so many young people in attendance, cheering on their colleagues, is truly amazing. On top of everything else, the crown jewel of the season may have been our annual Gala, chaired by Leticia & Steve Trauber, and Cheryl & Louis Raspino. After many years of hosting the gala at the Hobby Center, we made the decision to move the event offsite to the Post Oak Hotel, where we could increase attendance. Idina Menzel performed beautifully, along with students from the Humphreys School and The River, and several local artists. It was an amazing event, and clearly the best gala of the season, where we set a record for attendance and fundraising. As we close out our 50th Anniversary Season our leadership team of Hillary Hart (Executive Director) and Dan Knechtges (Artistic Director) are working to develop a strategic plan that will launch us into the next 50 years. It’s an exciting time at Theatre Under The Stars. When I began my term as Chair of Theatre Under The Stars two years ago, I was fortunate to follow Amy Pierce, who worked tirelessly on behalf of TUTS during a time of great challenge and transformation. It’s been my honor to serve as the Chair of TUTS, working alongside my fellow board members and the talented staff at TUTS; and I’m extremely pleased with the direction of the organization. I’m also confident that my successor, Frank Jones, will be a strong leader and advocate for TUTS as we begin our journey into the future. The best is yet to come!

A LETTER FROM DAN
Our 50th Anniversary season was one of the most successful seasons artistically for Theatre Under The Stars in quite some time. We strived to make sure every show and detail was up to a Broadway level. I think our audiences were rewarded with that! The season started off with a historic collaboration with Houston Ballet on Oklahoma with over 60 folks on stage celebrating that seminal show’s 75th anniversary. The Wiz was a gender-bending trip down the yellow brick road that won a Houston Chronicle shout out as a top show for 2018. Disney’s Beauty and The Beast broke box office records as it returned home 25 years to the date that it premiered here in Houston. Mamma Mia! was a blast of fun and sun in the depths of winter that got the audience up on its feet, dancing in the aisles. Ragtime challenged and moved our audiences all while setting a high new standard for TUTS. The mainstage season ended with the special presentation of Jerome Robbins' Broadway that had 47 dancers performing Robbins’ exquisite and demanding choreography. All of this hard work resulted in several nominations and wins at the Houston Press Awards including Best Choreography for Stanton Welch on Oklahoma!, Best Musical for Ragtime, Best Musical Direction for Marcia Milgrom Dodge on Ragtime, and Best Season for our entire 50th Anniversary Season. A stamp of approval for TUTS within the community. Something we can all be proud of! Our summer show at Miller Outdoor Theatre was relaunched this year through our new initiative, Public Works Houston, and Seussical. We did year-long community engagement programming with four community partners – New Hope Housing, Wesley Community Center, Dress for Success Houston and the YMCA of Greater Houston. Members of those community partners auditioned, and were cast alongside six professional actors,
and students from the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre and The River to make the company of the show. Being able to present a production of this magnitude and organizing all the details, was the greatest logistical accomplishment of the season. Our team figured out casting, transportation, procuring extra bathrooms and dressing room space for cast, catering, and management of personalities with flying colors. For those who were able to see it in the park, you know that Theatre Under The Stars returned to its mission of service through high quality musical theatre. Lives of cast members, and I believe the audience, were changed. Our students in the Humphreys School and The River continued to have banner years as well. We had an incredible Education Celebration with Vanessa Williams singing with our students, and raising money for the schools and scholarships. We had a record number of students in all of the shows this year. Oklahoma!, in addition to being a collaboration with the Ballet, provided the opportunity to include 10 students not only from our schools, but also 10 students from Houston Ballet’s school creating a beautiful collaboration. The Wiz had five students in the ensemble. Beauty and The Beast had a whopping 35 students including our first ever principal student from The River – Brennan Emeka as “Chip.” Mamma Mia! and Ragtime included 10 students each, and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway included 11. This year’s Inclusive Arts Showcase was so moving and excellently put together by Eileen Edmonds and Rozie Curtis. The Year In Review for the Humphreys School was directed by Cliff Alexander and had a Broadway Revue theme. The kids did so well! Rachael Logue and Mikeitta Williams put together a wonderful production of The Addams Family at Miller with over 35 students participating. The year ended with some great summer camps, and a
week-long intensive with Broadway Dreams, where our students worked with Broadway professionals, and shared the stage with them in a fun performance. Our Community Engagement programs, outside of Public Works Houston, also continued to thrive this year. Our Spotlight program was well attended, and was live streamed for the first time this year. The Tommy Tune Awards had a record-breaking 51 schools participating and a very successful show this year, which came in under a tight two hours. This year, through the Tommy Tune Awards, we also awarded more scholarships than any other awards show in the country with a total of $75K going to further students’ pursuit of the arts in higher education. Looking into the future, we have two amazing new programs that are starting this year. First, Arts In Medicine, a partnership with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, that focuses on creating arts experiences for children in hospitals. Second, a new partnership with Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where TUTS will be designing the musical theatre curriculum for students at HSPVA — a worthwhile community partnership. We had an incredible year celebrating our 50th Anniversary. As we move into our 51st year as Houston’s home for musical theatre, we will continue to bring light to the importance of the arts in Houston.

Theatre Under The Stars, Houston’s nonprofit home for musical theatre, is dedicated to enriching lives through innovative musical theatre, inclusive educational curriculum and dynamic community engagement.
Founded by Frank M. Young in 1968, Theatre Under The Stars was created to serve the Greater Houston community through producing timeless classics and creating/developing new and innovative musical theatre. We will build upon this legacy and identify, cultivate, and nurture innovative programming, steward our long-time supporters, cultivate new audiences and future artists, arts patrons, and supporters.

CELEBRATING OUR LEGACY OF MUSICAL THEATRE Theatre Under The Stars has spent the past 50 years serving the Houston community from our first performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre to the more than 300 productions TUTS has staged at Miller, The Music Hall, and now at the Hobby Center. With our 50th Season, we built upon the legacy of our founder, Frank M. Young, and confidently stepped forward into the next 50 years! Our 50th Anniversary Season was not only a year-long salute to the best musical theatre in Houston and beyond, we also launched Public Works Houston, community projects and expanded our reach into classrooms across the Greater Houston area. Furthermore, we expanded our accessibility program, No Boundaries, as part of our continued mission to make theatre accessible for everyone. Our No Boundaries program provides Open Captioning and Audio Described performances for each production, as well as Touch Tours and specialized workshops. This season, for the first time, Theatre Under The Stars offered an American Sign Language Interpreted (ASLI) performance for each production throughout the season. Theatre Under The Stars opened its 50th Anniversary Season with an epic production of Oklahoma! During the show’s run, TUTS celebrated its 50th birthday in style with the cast of 62 onstage as the packed house joined the cast in singing “Happy Birthday.” The whole 50th Anniversary Season from Oklahoma! to Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, was a celebration of everything that makes musical theatre great.

STUDENT SHOWCASE: BRENNAN EMEKA Traqina Emeka first learned about The River through Challenger Baseball, a part of West University Little League, that her son Brennan Emeka participated in. He began taking classes at The River when he was five years old. Brennan, who recently completed his freshman year at Klein Cain High School, has thrived with his participation. In addition to appearing in several mainstage productions at TUTS, Brennan, became the first River student to be cast in a principal role in a TUTS production when he played “Chip” in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast this season. "Our family has connected with other parents, and met really great kids with different needs and abilities while learning more about fine arts education…The River encourages each child to reach their potential … everyone is working together to help these kids shine. Theatre Under The Stars Community Engagement strives to provide challenging and enriching experiences for individuals across all communities by collaboratively exploring the connection between the art of musical theatre, the joy of learning, and the human experience. Through innovative arts-based programming with students, educators, community partner organizations, and the public, we endeavor to reach beyond our walls to connect with and to celebrate the community of Houston.

COLLABORATIONS & RECOGNITIONS
Featuring conversations with members of the creative teams and performances from the casts, TUTS Spotlight Series takes the audience inside the story behind the musicals. This free community event is the perfect opportunity to get to know the shows and the creative minds behind them. ACCESSIBILITY
Camp Adventure In collaboration with Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, Urban League, Children’s Museum, HISD, Houston Symphony, Houston Astros, and Houston Food Bank. Camp ran in July for two weeks at three HISD schools.
Theatre Under The Stars is committed to creating an environment where musical theatre can be fully enjoyed by all of our patrons. Through our No Boundaries program, we offer special events tied into each show such as Workshops and Touch Tours. Working in tandem with the Hobby Center, we are able to offer a variety of accessibility services and programming to our patrons. TOMMY TUNE AWARDS
The Tommy Tune Awards Program celebrates the educational value, artistry, and community of high school musical theatre in the Greater Houston area. It offers an opportunity for students and educators to share their creative accomplishments while instilling in young people the value of engaging in the performing arts as a lifelong pursuit. Tommy Tune Awards Scholarship Program awards merit and needs-based college scholarships to outstanding students from the participating schools. This year 3,275 students and over 90 educators from 51 schools, put in over 55 rehearsal hours.
Experiencing Program Over 180 students from Chinquapin Prep along with members of the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department have experienced TUTS 2018-19 Season productions and participated in corresponding show related workshops. Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation Donation Thanks to a generous donation by the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation TUTS has given out 1,000 books to students in 10 communities. Alief Partner in Education Award TUTS was honored by Alief Independent School District for our continued partnership in bringing musical theatre education to their schools. TUTS conducted professional development workshops for teachers at Cumming Elementary and taught Storydrama Artist Residencies for 12 classrooms. Musicals for Young Audiences TUTS Musicals for Young Audiences program continues to thrive with special performances for five of our six shows this season. Two of the shows in particular stood out for attendance: 2,581 students attended The Wiz and 2,630 attended Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. A total 8,567 students attended the student matinées this season. Arts in Medicine In January, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and Theatre Under The Stars announced a new expansion of their partnership with the Arts in Medicine program. The Arts in Medicine program provides arts experiences for children with chronic illnesses and their families. Through this program, TUTS teaching artists use music, language, dance, art, and mime to provide the children a break from their daily medical routines, opening the doors to creativity and fun.

Public Works Houston is a community engagement program that seeks to connect with the people of Houston by inviting them to be creators and not just spectators. This nine-month program culminates in the musical theatre company’s summer show at Miller Outdoor Theatre when individuals from community partners participate in the production with professional actors and artists. In the inaugural year of the Public Works Houston initiative, TUTS provided tailored programming for four community partners — Dress for Success Houston, Wesley Community Center, New Hope Housing Reed Rd. and YMCA of Greater Houston. Along with students from the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre and The River, many members from these community partners came together to create an astounding production of Seussical. Public Works Houston is an affiliate of the Public Theater’s highly successful Public Works program in New York City, founded in 2013.

A LETTER FROM HILLARY
Our 2018-2019, 50th Anniversary Season, gave us many reasons to honor our past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. Undeniably we have much to celebrate as our golden anniversary season has come to a close. Through the efforts of all of our stakeholders, 167,228 people attended our mainstage productions at the Hobby Center, 601 students enrolled at the Humphreys School, and 188 students benefited from our outstanding programming at The River. With the launch of Public Works Houston, and the incredibly moving production of Seussical, we saw “the hill� filled from the very first night; with an estimated total attendance at Miller of 25,500. Beyond the phenomenal attendance, the impact Public Works has had on our community (including all of us at TUTS) and the work that is now happening outside of the production between other non-profits only goes to show the impact we can have when we galvanize around a mutual purpose. We had ambitious goals this year for revenue. I am pleased to say that the aggregated success of our ticket sales and a phenomenal gala, reveal end of year projections (subject to audit) of a $629,693 operating surplus.
and for establishing TUTS in the national conversation in more meaningful ways. This year we began the process of creating an adaptive strategic plan with Board and staff aligning our vision and laying the foundation for our future. As we confidently move into the 51st year and beyond, we will continue to cultivate authentic relationships in our community that allow us to reflect the people we serve in our programming, patron attendance, student enrollment, staff, and Board. As always, we could not do this without the dedication and support of our Board, staff, and community partners. For you we are grateful! Thank you for all you do that makes our work possible.
